Health and Hygiene Support for Slum Children

It is a well-founded fact that 90% of the health care problem can be solved through good primary health care facilities. Zamzam has been facilitating primary health services through project named “Non-Formal Education with Health and Hygiene Support for Slum Children” with the financial support of “Palli Karma Shahayak Foundation”.

The main objectives of the project are;

  1. Facilitate health checkup and supply essential medicines & vitamins backup through 4-static Medical Centers & fortnightly-arranged satellite camps.
  2. Financial support for Safe Delivery on recommendation of physician.
  3. Arrangement of health & hygiene awareness campaign/meeting at grass root level.

Health counseling at family/individual level through 8-Health workers and advocacy to stop physical, emotional and sexual harassment of children etc.

  • Accordingly, staffs of the project includes 1 (One) MBBS Doctor, 4 (Four) Medical Assistants (DMF Doctor), 8 (Eight) Health Visitors and 4 (Four) Cleaners, 1 (One) Project Coordinator.

4 static clinics have been set up in different areas of Sylhet City Corporation where free health checkup and free medicine is provided. Moreover, free deworming tablets (twice in a year) and Vitamin A capsule (Once in a year) are also distributed among the slum dwellers. The field level awareness campaign and counseling around 117 literacy centers covering about 4822 households (in about 350 slums) are provided by 8 (Eight) Health workers. They also provide counseling to the adolescent girls and regular checkup services to pregnant women, diabetics and blood pressure patients. In addition, they provide support to static clinics and satellite health camps. Health visitors visit student’s family every day.

  • The Medical Officer (M.B.B.S) attends 16 medical camps per month and provides medical service. He also acts as a supervisory officer.
  • The Health and Hygiene part of the project is directly supervised by the Project Coordinator.

There are numerous positive outputs of the project. Insolvent and poor slum dwellers are getting free medical support with medicine, especially from M.B.B.S doctor; which has improved their standard of living. Financial support to pregnant women has increased the numbers of safe delivery. Arrangement of monthly awareness meeting and regular visit of health visitors to the slum have been helping to develop health conscious community. Gradually the hygiene condition of slums is getting better.
